abscission

Natural plant shedding

Abscission is the natural separation of a plant part from the main body—typically a leaf, fruit, or flower dropping from its stem.

Trees undergo abscission in autumn when leaves fall.

The term also appears in surgery for the cutting away of tissue.

The abscission of leaves conserves water during drought.
