Joshua tree

Desert spiky plant

A Joshua tree is a tall yucca native to the Mojave Desert, with spiky clusters of leaves at the ends of thick, twisted branches.

The distinctive silhouette has become an icon of the American Southwest: We pulled over to photograph the Joshua trees at sunset.

Named by Mormon settlers who saw the branches as arms raised in prayer, like the biblical Joshua.
