Spanish moss
Gray hanging strands
Spanish moss is a grayish, stringy plant that hangs from trees in the American South, particularly from live oaks and cypresses.
Despite its name, it's neither Spanish nor moss—it's an air plant related to pineapples, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air.
The draping strands evoke Southern Gothic atmosphere: Spanish moss swayed from the branches like ghostly curtains.
