water moccasin

Venomous wetland serpent

A water moccasin is a venomous pit viper native to the southeastern United States, found in swamps, marshes, and slow-moving waterways.

Also called a cottonmouth for its habit of displaying the white interior of its mouth when threatened.

The term is sometimes loosely applied to nonvenomous water snakes in the same region: I saw a snake by the creek—probably just a harmless water snake, not a true water moccasin.
