aster

Centrosome's radiating fibers

An aster is a flowering plant with daisy-like blooms, typically having a yellow center surrounded by ray-like petals in purple, pink, blue, or white.

Asters bloom in late summer and fall, often called Michaelmas daisies in Britain.

The name comes from the Greek word for star, describing the flower's shape.

In biology, aster also refers to the star-shaped cluster of fibers that forms around each centrosome during cell division. (Capitalized Aster is the plant genus.)
