backpressure

Upstream pressure buildup

Backpressure is resistance to flow in a system, originally referring to fluid or gas pushing back against the direction of movement in pipes or exhaust systems.

In computing, backpressure describes what happens when a system receives data faster than it can process it—the receiving component signals upstream to slow down: The server applied backpressure to prevent the queue from overflowing.

The term appears in discussions of streaming data, message queues, and reactive programming.
