wastegate

Boost pressure valve

A wastegate is a valve in a turbocharged engine that diverts exhaust gases away from the turbine wheel to regulate boost pressure.

Without it, the turbocharger would build excessive pressure and potentially damage the engine.

The wastegate opens at a preset pressure threshold, bleeding off exhaust to prevent overboost: The wastegate was stuck closed, causing the turbo to spike dangerously high.
