wellhead

Surface extraction point

A wellhead is the structure at the surface of a well—the assembly of pipes, valves, and fittings that caps the opening and controls flow.

Oil and gas wells have elaborate wellheads; water wells may have simple ones.

Figuratively, a wellhead is a source or origin: the wellhead of a river, the wellhead of democratic thought.
