message

What texts convey

A message is information sent from one party to another.

Messages can be spoken, written, or transmitted electronically: I left a message on her voicemail, Send me a message when you arrive.

The word extends to underlying meaning or moral: The movie's message about greed was heavy-handed.

To message someone is to communicate with them, especially digitally.

To get the message is to understand what's being conveyed, often something implicit.
