illusionistic

Faking visual depth

Illusionistic describes art or techniques that create convincing illusions of three-dimensional space, depth, or reality on a flat surface.

The term applies especially to painting and decorative arts where the artist tricks the eye into perceiving something that isn't there—a ceiling that appears to open onto the sky, a painted doorway that seems real.

The illusionistic murals made the small room feel like an expansive garden.

Trompe l'oeil is the quintessential illusionistic technique.
