tondo

Round art piece

A tondo is a circular painting or relief sculpture, a format particularly favored during the Italian Renaissance for devotional images of the Madonna and Child.

The round frame creates a self-contained compositional space that artists found challenging and distinctive.

Michelangelo's Doni Tondo is among the most celebrated examples.

The plural may be either tondos or the Italian tondi.
