putti

Chubby angelic figures

Putti are the chubby winged infants that populate Renaissance and Baroque art, hovering around religious and mythological scenes.

The singular is putto.

They derive from ancient depictions of Cupid and became decorative fixtures in painting, sculpture, and architecture—often appearing on ceilings, around altarpieces, or supporting coats of arms.

Not quite angels, not quite cherubs, putti occupy their own category of celestial baby.
