civil rights movement

Fight for equality

A civil rights movement is any organized effort to secure equal rights and treatment for a group facing discrimination.

The term applies broadly to campaigns for racial equality, women's suffrage, LGBTQ rights, or disability rights across different countries and eras: The disability rights movement drew inspiration from earlier civil rights movements. (Capitalized Civil Rights Movement refers specifically to the American movement of the 1950s–60s.)
