John Brown
Radical antislavery martyr
John Brown was an American abolitionist who led the 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry, attempting to seize a federal arsenal and spark a slave rebellion.
His execution made him a martyr to the antislavery cause.
The song "John Brown's Body" became a Union marching tune, later reworked as "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." The name sometimes appears as shorthand for radical or violent activism against injustice.
