Sojourner Truth

"Isabella" became her

Sojourner Truth was an American abolitionist and women's rights activist, born into slavery around 1797 and escaping in 1826.

She became a powerful orator whose 1851 speech at a women's convention—later known as "Ain't I a Woman?"—challenged both racial and gender oppression.

Her adopted name reflected her mission: a temporary resident (sojourner) speaking divine truth.

She died in 1883.
