Zika

Aedes-transmitted tropical fever

Zika is a mosquito-borne virus that causes mild fever, rash, and joint pain in most people but can cause severe birth defects when pregnant women are infected.

The 2015-2016 outbreak in Brazil brought international attention to the disease: Health officials warned travelers about Zika.

Named after the Ugandan forest where the virus was first identified.
