West Nile
African river disease
West Nile refers to West Nile virus, a mosquito-borne illness that can cause fever, body aches, and in severe cases, neurological damage.
Named for the West Nile district of Uganda where it was first identified.
Most infections are mild or asymptomatic, but outbreaks prompt public health warnings about mosquito control: West Nile cases spike in late summer.
