red-eyes

Flights departing late

Red-eyes is informal for overnight flights that depart late and arrive early, leaving passengers with bloodshot eyes from lack of sleep: I caught the red-eye from LA to New York.

The term also refers to the glowing-pupil effect in flash photography, caused by light reflecting off the retina.
