hantavirus
Mouse-transmitted lung illness
Hantavirus is a group of viruses carried by rodents, transmitted to humans through contact with infected animals or their droppings, urine, or saliva.
Infection can cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a severe and often fatal respiratory illness: The hikers contracted hantavirus after sleeping in a mouse-infested cabin.
Named for the Hantan River in South Korea, where the virus was first identified.
