Xenophon

Socratic disciple, soldier

Xenophon was an ancient Greek historian, soldier, and philosopher who lived in the fourth and fifth centuries BCE.

A student of Socrates, he wrote accounts of Greek history and military campaigns, most famously the *Anabasis*, describing Greek mercenaries' long retreat from Persia.

His practical, soldierly prose contrasts with Plato's more philosophical treatments of Socrates.
