Demosthenes

Pebble-mouthed rhetorician

Demosthenes was an Athenian statesman and orator of the fourth century BCE, widely considered the greatest speaker of ancient Greece.

His speeches against Philip II of Macedon—the Philippics—became models of persuasive rhetoric.

The name evokes eloquence hard-won: Demosthenes famously overcame a speech impediment by practicing with pebbles in his mouth.
