formaldehyde
Pungent preserving gas
Formaldehyde is a pungent, colorless gas used as a preservative and disinfectant.
In solution (formalin), it preserves biological specimens and embalms corpses.
Formaldehyde also appears in building materials, adhesives, and some fabrics, where off-gassing can cause health concerns: The new carpet smell was formaldehyde.
It's a known carcinogen at high exposure levels.
