synchrotron
Circular beam accelerator
A synchrotron is a type of particle accelerator that uses magnetic fields to bend charged particles in a circular path while synchronized electric fields boost their speed.
Unlike earlier cyclotrons, synchrotrons adjust field strength as particles accelerate, allowing them to reach much higher energies.
Modern synchrotrons also generate intense beams of light used in materials science, biology, and medical imaging: The research team used synchrotron radiation to map the protein's structure.
