X-chromosomes
Sex-determining genetic material
X-chromosomes is the plural of X-chromosome, one of the two sex chromosomes in mammals.
Females typically have two X-chromosomes (XX), males one X and one Y (XY).
The X-chromosome carries genes for many traits beyond sex determination: Color blindness is linked to the X-chromosome.
The term appears in discussions of genetics, heredity, and sex-linked conditions.
