Y chromosome

Masculine genetic marker

The Y chromosome is one of two sex chromosomes in mammals, including humans.

Males typically carry one X and one Y chromosome, while females carry two X chromosomes.

The Y chromosome is much smaller than the X and contains relatively few genes, but it carries the SRY gene responsible for triggering male development.

Because it passes only from father to son, the Y chromosome is used in genetic genealogy to trace paternal lineages.
