Swiss Guard
Pope's ceremonial protectors
The Swiss Guard is a corps of Swiss soldiers serving as ceremonial protectors and bodyguards, most famously at the Vatican, where they have guarded the Pope since the early sixteenth century.
Their distinctive Renaissance-era uniforms—striped in blue, red, and yellow—make them instantly recognizable.
The term sometimes refers more broadly to Swiss mercenary units that historically served various European monarchs.
