Canton is the traditional English name for Guangzhou, a major city in southern China.
The term persists in Cantonese, referring to the Chinese language and culture of the region: Cantonese cuisine, Cantonese opera.
Canton is also a common American place name, with cities in Ohio, Michigan, Massachusetts, and elsewhere.
The Canton Fair is China's largest trade exhibition. (Lowercase canton is a territorial subdivision or heraldic term.)
