Soviet republics
Communist federation states
Soviet republics were the constituent states of the Soviet Union, each nominally representing a major ethnic nationality: the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, Ukrainian SSR, Georgian SSR, and twelve others.
Though theoretically sovereign with rights including secession, real power resided in Moscow.
The term appears in historical discussions of the USSR and its 1991 dissolution into independent nations.
