Sputnik

First artificial satellite

Sputnik was the first artificial satellite to orbit Earth, launched by the Soviet Union in 1957.

The name means "traveling companion" in Russian.

The launch shocked the United States and triggered the Space Race.

The word now evokes Cold War technological rivalry: a Sputnik moment describes a sudden realization that competitors have surged ahead.
