Lake Baikal
Deepest freshwater body
Lake Baikal is a massive freshwater lake in southern Siberia, Russia, holding roughly one-fifth of the world's unfrozen surface fresh water.
It is the deepest lake on Earth and among the oldest, formed by tectonic activity over 25 million years ago.
The lake supports unique endemic species, including the Baikal seal, found nowhere else.
Russians often call it "the Sacred Sea" for its cultural and ecological significance.
