Eastern Bloc

Cold War communist alliance

The Eastern Bloc was the group of communist states aligned with the Soviet Union during the Cold War, including Poland, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria.

The term distinguished these nations from Western democracies: Travel to the Eastern Bloc was heavily restricted.

The bloc dissolved with the fall of communism in 1989–1991.
