CIS

Former USSR successor

CIS is an acronym with several meanings depending on context.

In geography and politics, it stands for Commonwealth of Independent States, the loose alliance of former Soviet republics formed after the USSR's dissolution.

In chemistry, cis- is a prefix indicating atoms on the same side of a molecular bond, opposite of trans-.

Most recently, cisgender—identifying with the gender assigned at birth—has made cis common in discussions of gender identity: cis women, cis men. (Lowercase cis is the gender prefix.)
