Chechen

North Caucasus ethnicity

Chechen refers to a member of an ethnic group native to Chechnya, a republic in the North Caucasus region of Russia.

The Chechens have a distinct language and predominantly Muslim culture.

The word also describes anything relating to this people or their homeland: Chechen separatists, Chechen cuisine.

Two brutal wars between Chechen independence fighters and Russian forces in the 1990s and 2000s brought the region to international attention.
