five-year plan
Soviet economic blueprint
A five-year plan is an economic or organizational strategy spanning five years.
The term originates from Soviet central planning under Stalin, where the state set industrial and agricultural targets in five-year cycles.
Now it applies broadly to any medium-term goals: What's your five-year plan?
The question often appears in job interviews, sometimes mockingly: I don't have a five-year plan—I barely have a five-minute plan.
