carats

Jeweler's mass measures

Carats are units of weight for gemstones, equal to 200 milligrams.

A five-carat diamond is larger and typically more valuable than a one-carat stone.

The term also appears as karat when measuring gold purity, where 24 karats represents pure gold: an 18-karat gold ring.

The spellings are often used interchangeably, though American usage tends to distinguish them.
