Freetown

Sierra Leone's capital

Freetown is the capital and largest city of Sierra Leone, a port on the Atlantic coast of West Africa.

Founded in 1792 as a settlement for freed slaves, it became a haven for liberated Africans throughout the nineteenth century.

The name reflects this origin—a town for the free.
