Sakhalin
North of Hokkaido
Sakhalin is a large Russian island in the North Pacific, just north of Japan and east of the Russian mainland.
It was divided between Russia and Japan from 1905 until the Soviet Union seized the entire island in 1945.
The island is known for oil and gas reserves: Sakhalin energy projects have drawn international investment.
