leper colony
Quarantined patient community
A leper colony is a settlement where people with leprosy were isolated from the general population, historically established to prevent contagion and often located on remote islands or in isolated areas.
The practice reflected both genuine medical concern and social stigma.
Few such colonies remain, as leprosy is now treatable with antibiotics.
Molokai in Hawaii was once a famous leper colony.
