whale hunting
Maritime mammal harvesting
Whale hunting is the practice of pursuing and killing whales, typically for meat, oil, and other products.
Once a major global industry, commercial whaling depleted many species to near extinction before international restrictions largely ended it in the late twentieth century.
Some indigenous communities retain rights to hunt whales for subsistence and cultural purposes: The Makah tribe resumed whale hunting in the 1990s.
