The People's Republic of China is the official name of China, the country in East Asia governed by the Chinese Communist Party since 1949.
The name distinguishes mainland China from the Republic of China (Taiwan), which the Communist revolution displaced.
In diplomatic and formal contexts, PRC appears frequently: The PRC maintains that Taiwan is part of its territory.
