Summer Palace

Beijing royal gardens

The Summer Palace is a vast imperial garden complex in Beijing, China, built for Qing dynasty emperors as a retreat from the Forbidden City's summer heat.

The grounds feature pavilions, temples, bridges, and Kunming Lake, an artificial body of water covering three-quarters of the site.

Destroyed by European forces in 1860 and rebuilt, it remains one of China's most visited historical sites.
