New Netherland

Manhattan's colonial predecessor

New Netherland was the Dutch colonial territory in North America, centered on the Hudson River valley and including parts of present-day New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Delaware.

Established in 1614 and administered by the Dutch West India Company, the colony's capital was New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island.

The English seized the territory in 1664 and renamed it New York, though Dutch influence persisted in place names, architecture, and families like the Roosevelts and Vanderbilts.
