patroon

Colonial estate holder

A patroon was a landowner in the Dutch colonial system of New Netherland (later New York), granted large estates along the Hudson River in exchange for bringing settlers to the colony.

The patroons held near-feudal powers over their tenants, collecting rents and administering local justice.

The system persisted into the nineteenth century, leaving its mark on Hudson Valley place names and land disputes.
