Canaanite

Pre-Israelite Levantine inhabitant

A Canaanite was an inhabitant of Canaan, the ancient region roughly corresponding to modern Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, and parts of Syria and Jordan.

The term appears frequently in the Hebrew Bible, where Canaanites are the peoples displaced by the Israelites.

In biblical and archaeological contexts, Canaanite describes the Semitic languages, religions, and cultures of this region before Israelite dominance: Canaanite religious practices, Canaanite script.
