Canaanites

Ancient Levant dwellers

The Canaanites were the ancient inhabitants of Canaan, the region roughly corresponding to modern-day Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, and parts of Syria and Jordan.

In the Hebrew Bible, they appear as the peoples living in the land before the Israelite conquest.

The term now refers broadly to the Bronze Age cultures and Semitic-speaking peoples of this region: Canaanite religion, Canaanite languages.

Archaeological and linguistic study has revealed sophisticated urban civilizations predating biblical accounts.
