Moabites

Ancient Jordanian tribe

Moabites were an ancient Semitic people who lived east of the Dead Sea in what is now Jordan.

They appear frequently in the Hebrew Bible as neighbors and rivals of the Israelites.

The Moabite king Mesha left a famous stone inscription describing his rebellion against Israel.

Ruth, the great-grandmother of King David, was a Moabite.

The term now appears mainly in biblical and archaeological contexts.
