Salafism
Sunni orthodox revival
Salafism is a conservative movement within Sunni Islam that advocates returning to the practices of the earliest Muslims—the *salaf*, or pious predecessors.
Salafis emphasize strict adherence to the Quran and hadith, rejecting later theological and legal innovations as corruptions.
The movement ranges from quietist scholars focused on personal piety to political activists to jihadist factions.
Salafism has grown significantly in the Gulf states since the 1970s.
