Robert Mugabe
Robert Mugabe was the leader of Zimbabwe from 1980 to 2017, first as prime minister, then as president.
He began as a liberation hero who helped end white minority rule in Rhodesia, but his regime became synonymous with authoritarian rule, economic collapse, and violent suppression of opposition.
His name evokes the trajectory from revolutionary to dictator: He started as a freedom fighter and ended up another Mugabe.
