FORTRAN

Scientific computing language

FORTRAN (Formula Translation) is an early programming language developed in the 1950s for scientific and engineering computation.

It was among the first high-level languages, allowing programmers to write in something closer to mathematical notation rather than machine code.

FORTRAN dominated technical computing for decades and influenced many subsequent languages.

The all-caps spelling reflects the era when computer systems used only uppercase characters.

The simulation was written in FORTRAN. (Modern usage typically spells it Fortran.)
