punch card

Perforated computing medium

A punch card is a stiff paper card used to store data through patterns of punched holes.

Each hole position represents a bit of information, readable by mechanical or electronic sensors.

Punch cards were the primary input medium for early computers and tabulating machines through the mid-20th century: Don't fold, spindle, or mutilate was printed on many cards.

The format has been almost entirely replaced by electronic storage.
